Companies that are bogged down by bureaucracy and politics can be a major problem for efficiency and productivity. Bureaucracy and politics can make work processes more complicated and lengthy, hinder decision-making and innovation, and cause employees to feel pressured and uncomfortable at work. However, there are also positive aspects of bureaucracy and politics that can make a company more organized and controlled, as well as prevent internal conflict.
One example of a company known for its bureaucratic and political problems is Enron. Enron was declared bankrupt after it was revealed that the company had engaged in unethical financial practices and hid losses from shareholders. One of the main reasons for Enron’s failure was excessive bureaucracy and strong internal politics, which made executives and directors more focused on themselves than the company and shareholders.
Companies that are suitable for high bureaucratic and political environments are companies that are oriented towards stability and conservatism, such as large companies and companies in the public sector. However, companies that are not suitable are companies that are oriented towards innovation and change, such as start-ups or companies in the creative industry.
