Without Self-Reflection, Mistakes Will Always Look Like Someone Else’s Fault
Life is often filled with social interactions, whether within our families, workplaces, or other social circles. Yet, too often in these interactions, we tend to point fingers at others when problems or conflicts arise. Surprisingly, this tendency may indicate a lack of healthy self-reflection.
Self-reflection is the art of introspectively examining ourselves critically. It involves evaluating our actions, behaviours, and decisions. Effective self-reflection allows us to understand the emotions, motives, and values that underlie our actions. However, regrettably, many individuals prefer to blame others rather than engage in self-reflection.
Why do we tend to blame others? There are several reasons behind this behavior. One of them is our vulnerable ego. When we make mistakes or encounter problems, it’s often easier to shift the blame away from ourselves and seek scapegoats rather than admit our own shortcomings or errors. This provides a temporary shield to protect our self-esteem.
